The Zsolnay Vilmos Wind Orchestra has been announced best orchestra in its class at the 21st International Festival of Wind Orchestras Prague held on 15-16 February 2019. Their interpretation of the compulsory composition was the best in category, the ZSWO was the absolute winner of the festival. András Major, the conductor of the orchestra received the awards from Antonín Staněk Minister of Culture.
The success of ZSWO was supported by the former dean of the Medical School, the current rector of the University of Pécs, Attila Miseta.
In their evaluation, the jury of the International Festival of Wind Orchestras emphasized that the ZSWO orchestra were more than capable of playing punctually in tune (tempo, rhythm, other instructions), they have been expressing the original intention of the composer in creating the atmosphere, the colours and the mood. The report of the Committee highlighted the solo artists’ outstanding performance, and they also praised the polished nuances of chamber music moments. They also drew attention to the rich and balanced sound of the orchestra, as well as the clear balance of the different sections adjusting perfectly to the dynamic range and the acoustics of the auditorium. According to the jury, András Major conducted the orchestra with exceptional talent.
The Zsolnay Wind Orchestra is perfectly capable of expressing and interpreting contemporary as well as popular pieces on the highest level, therefore it is ideal for representing the diversity and multicultural character of the University. Among its members we can find former and current students of the Music Institute, exceptionally talented students, students from other faculties as well, students of the Arts and Music Secondary School, and various places. This also proves the social inclusive and integrative character of the orchestra.
Congratulations to the Zsolnay Wind Orchestra, and thank you for the support of the Medical School!
